Green Technology

Since April 2010, Graham and David, along with

staff support from New Prospects Association,

have been the new residents at Sunbeam House.

(See below)

The property was formerly the caretaker’s home

at Wallsend’s Richardson Dees School, and was

chosen by North Tyneside Council to be a

showcase dwelling with the smallest possible

carbon footprint. The first stage was to add the

highly insulated, sustainable timber extension

which provided an extra bedroom with en-suite.

The original structure was also insulated, dry

lined and double glazed. The conventional gas

fired central heating system was replaced with an

air sourced heat pump, under floor heating and a

solar thermal domestic hot water system.

Additional sustainable features include energy

efficient lighting and electrical equipment, along

with rainwater harvesting for use in flushing the

toilet and supplying the washing machine.

The energy consumption levels will now be

recorded for the first couple of years to monitor

the environmental impact of the property and the

difference it makes to our supported residents.
