We've come a long way in 20 years

New Prospects was established in 1990 to help people in Northgate and Prudhoe Hospitals to move into more appropriate accommodation which met their individual needs.

Initially, New Prospects opened a residential home for five people and a Community Activity Service in North Tyneside in 1991. In 1999 our first Supported Living Service, a purpose-built bungalow for three women with complex needs, was opened in partnership with a Housing Association (See 'Our Services').

The year 2000 saw the start of our outreach contract with North Tyneside Council. This began with 132 hours and has steadily increased to a current total of around 550 hours of outreach support for people in the area. This support ranges from helping people with budgeting, improving their access to a range of activities and managing their homes, to more complex services, such as support for individuals with autism.

2003 was the beginning of our partnership with Northumberland Council. Initially this was for three individual tenancies and a shared tenancy for two young men. This has now grown to 10 services that mostly specialise in working with people with a forensic history.

In 2005 new Supported Living Services opened in Newcastle, one of which is a specialised forensic service. Since 2006 we have also steadily built up a Community Enabling Service in Newcastle. This service works with clients at all levels of the Learning Disability Spectrum. Some are very complex and challenging and require two-to-one support.

An exciting new service commenced in 2005 with the Floating Support Service for North Tyneside Council. This service supports parents with a Learning Disability to manage their homes, offering whatever practical day-to-day support is needed (See 'Our Services').

In 2008 we expanded our services in North Tyneside to include two new supported living services, with a third completed in 2009. During 2009 we also supported a gentleman with autism to move into his own property which he and his family purchased under the Government's Shared Ownership scheme. There was considerable involvement from the family in staff recruitment and induction and we reviewed our whole recruitment process as a result.

In 2009, we opened a further new supported living service in North Tyneside.  As with all our services it offers a safe place to live with the right amount of support whilst allowing people to maintain their independence and have control over their lives.

In 2010 in line with national restructuring of the Adult Social Care system, we will continue to work to put even more emphasis on the importance of the individuals we work for, putting them at the heart of what we do.
